An early morning challenge: Photographing 1,000 Buddhist monks

djc_3784Sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for. We’d been hoping to see a procession of monks going out for their morning rounds of alms collecting, when we noticed preparations for a major ceremony and found out that the next day 1,000 (precisely 1,000 in this case) monks would be traveling by boat from the far corners of the Inle Lake region to assemble and then join a procession of boats which would receive donations of food and new robes. Deluxe African Photo Safari -- Botswana December 2012

Dates:
Wed, 11/28/2012 - 14:00 - Sat, 12/08/2012 - 18:00

I'm pleased to announce our next trip back to the magical wildlife photography of the Okavango Delta and Linyanti/Savuti areas of Botswana. Once again we've been able to secure accommodations at several of the very best camps in the country--on private concessions in prime areas for photo safaris. We've made the trip modular so whether you only have a limited time to spend with us or the luxury of an extended safari you can participate. And we've added a special discount for non-shooting or casual shooting companions who don't need as much room and weight for camera gear. Read on to learn more...

Panasonic Lumix LX5—The Ultimate Point & Shoot? (& Canon G12 Comparison)

lx5The holy grail for photographers is a camera that is small enough to fit in your pocket but still takes great images, preferably with not only a reasonable on board flash but the ability to add a hotshoe flash as needed. And of course many of us also consider the ability to shoot Raw files and HD video a necessity in this day and age. This grail was unachievable until recently with the Canon Powershot G12. But now Panasonic has introduced an even more compact camera that fits the bill, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. To find out whether it measures up I took it to Africa with me and used it for candids, environmentals and some wildlife shots for three weeks. Here’s what I found… Read more »

Create Better Panoramas using HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photography

pl_bantaysrei_hdrpano-trim2One of the first steps I teach when we work on panoramas at a workshop is that you need to put your camera in manual to ensure that you get an even exposure from one side to the other. Setting that exposure requires panning across the scene and choosing a setting that is a good compromise from the lightest to darkest areas. Obviously this requires soft and even light and makes it difficult to photograph panoramas where part of the scene is brightly lit and part is in shadow.

Hacking on the merged image later using somewhat crude tools like the Shadow/Highlight adjustment in Photoshop is the most common workaround to try to address the problem of unevenly lit panoramas. But thanks to some goading by my friend Jim Ludemann I’ve started experimenting with using HDR when shooting tricky panoramas to allow me to create successful images even of scenes which have difficult lighting conditions. In this post we’ll take you through the process, step by step…
