nik’s Detail Extractor: For when spot metering just won’t cut it

EDL_InleLake_Fishermen_1960Unless you only shoot models in a studio, you’ve no doubt run into a lighting situation your camera just can’t handle. A very common one is a shaded subject in a bright environment. There are two classic ways to deal with the situation. First is flash. Of course, that only works if the subject is close enough and you have the right flash(es) to achieve the desired effect. The second, which I’ve often used at sporting events where the contestants are wearing caps, is to spot meter on the subject. But sometimes, like in the case of this Inthar fisherman in Myanmar, neither of those approaches will work. I’d really like to capture his wonderful facial expressions, but not lose the rendering of the background. Finally—A way to hook your iPad to Photoshop!

Ever since I first saw an iPad I thought what a perfect companion it’d be to a desktop version of Photoshop. A convenient input output device with its own processor it may not have the touch resolution of the much more expensive and special purpose Cintiq from Wacom but it is certainly much more command and with multi-touch offers some unique advantages. As of the recent crop of Android tablets the same can be said for the Android platform.

Free Updates to Bibble, Aperture and iPhoto

Bibble Labs announced a free update for users of Bibble Pro and Bibble Lite version 5 to 5.21 adding support for the new model Canon cameras. Version 5.21 is available now. Apple has also updated Aperture and iPhoto through its Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.6 which in addition to adding support to the new Canon models as well as new Olympus and Pentax models fixes some issues with raw images from the Nikon D7000 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2.
